Osteoporosis - Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone
disease characterized by reduced bone mass, micro architectural
detoriation of bone tissues and increase risk of fracture.
In normal individual, bone mass increases during
skeletal growth to reach a peak between the age of 20 – 25
years. But falls there after in both sexes, accelerated phase of
more rapid bone loss in women due to the effect of estrogen
deficiency at the menopause.
Many factors regulate bone mass and bone loss in
normal individual. It includes genetic influences and
environmental factors such as exercise, smoking and diet.
Some drugs such as corticosteroids also induces
osteoporosis. Bone
loss may occur as a complication of various endocrine,
inflammatory and neoplastic conditions, Hypogonadism and a result
of various drug treatments.
Clinical Features
There are no symptoms in the early stages of
this except fragility fractures.
This can affect virtually any bone, but most common sites
are Forearm (colles fracture) Spine (Vertebral Fracture), Femur (
Hip fracture).
Treatment
Life style modification, Nutritional supplements
(calcium from 500 to 1000mg daily) and Vitamin D.
How Ayurveda takes care of it?
According to Ayurveda osteoporosis can be
compared with srothodushti of Asthidhatu caused by vatakshaya.
Srothodushti is nothing but improper transmission of nutrients
between the tissues i.e., bone tissues. In Ayurveda it can be
managed effectively.
Treatment Pattern
Shodhana & Shamanam (Bruhmana)
Bruhmana ( Nourishing )
a) Internal
b)External
Internal
Includes Snehapanam i.e., Medicated Ghee and
other Internal Medicines which promotes and rejuvenates bone
tissues. Medicines are selected according to the condition of the
patient and severity of the disease.
External
Bruhmana externally includes Abhayangam,
Elakkizhi, Pizhichil, Nyavarakihizhi, Vasthi, Lepam etc selected
according to the condition.
Our Experiences
It is clinically proved in our experience,
that patients underwent Ayurvedic treatment for osteoporosis have
increased their bone mineral density considerably. Patients at the
age of 40-60 years and with a moderate degree of osteoporosis got
upto 90% result. Patients aged above 60-70 with moderate
osteoporosis got upto 70% result.
Treatment Schedule
Internal Medicines and external theraphies
are selected according to the condition.
Time frame
Generally 14 to 21 days in moderate conditions. In
severe cases and in old age people it takes approximately 30 to 40
days. This treatment if consecutively repeated for 3 years will
yield maximum result.

Multiple sclerosis
-
Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating disease, a
non-contagious chronic autoimmune disorder of the central nervous
system which can present with a variety of neurological symptoms
occurring in attacks or slowly progressing over time. Exact cause
remains unknown. Due to the effect of Nervous system it can lead
to long term impaired mobility and disability in severe cases.
Ultimate cause of Multiple sclerosis unknown.
It is hypothesized that a viral infection or other environmental
factor in childhood might prime the immune system for a abnormal
reaction in later life. It is widely accepted that special subset
of white blood cells called Tcells play a key role in the
development of Multiple Sclerosis. These cells recognize healthy
part of the Central Nervous system as foreign and attack them as
they would a virus. In Multiple Sclerosis part of nervous system
primarily attack is mylin. Mylin is a fatty substance that covers
axon of nerve cells and which is important for proper nerve
conduction.
Normally there is a type barrier between blood and
brain called blood brain barrier(BBB). Build of endothelial cells
lining blood vessels wall. Here Tcells breaks BBB and causes
inflammatory processes. Due to this it is considered as Auto
Immune Disorder.
Clinical Features:
Affected individual may experience a wild
variety of symptoms such asVision Loss, Deploplia, Nystagmus, speech difficulties
various kinds of tremors, weakness, spactity, numbness, bladder,
bowel as well as sexual dysfunctioning. Loss of short term memory,
depression, fatigue.
Management
Cortico steroids – Prednisolone
Long term – Infernon - Beta IA or IB.

How Ayurveda takes care of it?
All the movements of the body ( both
voluntary and involuntary ) comes under the control of the central
nervous system. According to Ayurveda movement is considered to be
the property of vata dosha and there is any delay or dysfunction
in the movement neurological defict is vata dosha involved. This
vitiation of vata may due to any other doshas.(Pitta and Kabha or
Datus). In Multiple Scelorsis the dosha which causes visheshan of
vatta is kapha and medhodatu so the line of treatment will be the
Rookshanam. First is to reduce the inflammation of the brain cells
and then to nourish them (Brahuman).
Bruhmana includes Internal and External.
External Therapies includes
Rookshasweda
Udwarthanam (Powder
Massage)
Elakkizhi
Najavarakizhi
Shirodharam
Thalam
Shirovasti
Shodhana includes virechanam, nasyam, vasti
selected accordingly.
Internal medicines include which reduce the
inflammation of the central nervous system and also it nourishes
the Central nervous system. This includes medicated ghee and other
forms of medicines selected accordingly.
Time frame
Generally 14 to 21 days in moderate conditions. In
severe cases and in old age people it takes approximately 30 to 40
days. This treatment if consecutively repeated for 3 years will
yield maximum result.

Arthritis-
(from Greek
arthro-, joint + -itis, inflammation) is a group of conditions
that affect the health of the bone joints in the body.
Arthritic diseases includes Rheumatoid Arthritis
and psoriatic Arthitis, which are autoimmune dieases, septic
arthritis, caused by joint infection, and more common osteo
arthritis and degenerative joint diseases. Arthritis can be caused
from strains and injuries caused by repetitive motion , sports,
over exertion and falls. Unlike the autoimune disease, osteoarthritis largely affects
older people and results
from the degeneration of joints catilage.

ayurveda, Arthritis can be compared with all inflammatory
conditions of the joint.
In
this mainly involved is vata dosha along with this it vitiates
other doshas as well as dhatus and causes diseases.
If
only Vata is involved in the joint ie., called Sandhivata (OsteoArthritis).
If
Vata along with Aama is involved ie., called Aamavata
If
Vata along with Raktha is involved ie., called Vatharaktham
But
all these three the clinical symptoms differs and also line of
treatment may differ.

FEM 40 Care
This package mainly deals with the problems
of females just before and after cessation of the Menstrual cycle.
Menopause is the cessation of Menstrual cycle. Usually attain
menopause at the age of 45 – 50 years. Five years before this
there is a gradual increase in the number of ovulatory cycles.
Estrogen secretion falls and negative feedback result in
increased pituatory secretions of LH & FSH.
Menopause symptoms relate to estrogen
deficiency. In some patients they are relatively minor but others
they are a major problem.
Symptoms
a) Vaso Motor
Sweating
Hot Flush
b) Psycological
Anxiety
Irritability
Emotional
lability
c) Genito Urinary
Dyspareunia
Vaginal Infection
Urgency of Micturition
d) Musculo skeletal
Osteoporosis
Hot Flushes may start till has regular
periods and 25% of women they go after more that 5 years. Their
precise cause remains unknown, but they are associated with an LH
or pulse. In the large term the fall in estrogen secretion is
associated with the increased bone resorption and the higher risk
of Osteoporosis. Before the Menopause women have lower rates of
Cardiovascular disease than men but after Menopause risk advantage
is reduced.
Treatment
Estrogen
replacement therapy usually called (HRT) is the known conservative
treatment in patient with the major difficulties. But in case of
strong family history of breast cancer (HRT) is not recommended.
Vaginal tropical symptoms may be helped by tropical estrogen.
Anxiety or Emotional problems associated with
Menopause do not respond to HRT. They may need treatment in their
own respect.
Menopause - Ayurvedic View
According to Ayurveda Menopause can be
compared with Nashtharthevam and Dathuksheyam.
Generally there would be increase in the Vata
and having the sysmptoms of all Dathuksheyas.
Symptoms like dryness of body, tiredness,
intolerance to sound and also result in the Astidathuksheya.
Here there is a change of Osteoponia which
leads to Osteoporosis and later on the Osteoarthritis.
How Ayurveda takes care of it?
All the signs and symptoms are well managed
by Ayurvedic line of treatments. To combat Dathuksheya the
nourishing (Brahumana) in every aspect.
